In the healthcare industry, one of the most important yet under-appreciated groups of people is nurses. Nurses play a very vital role in healthcare and they have an even more important role to play in Health Outcome Expectations. The act of nursing involves everything from the prevention of illness, to caring for the ill, disables and sickly, to the promotion of population health. In order to shape healthcare outcomes expectations and health policy, nurses need to be properly engaged and involved in the conversation.
Patient Care Teams Made up of Nurses
Nursing is such a powerful force in the healthcare industry. Care teams are a great resource for any healthcare organizations. When nurses oversee the care of patients as they transition from the hospital to their homes, it evidently reduces the rate of readmissions. Nurses help patients achieve better long-term health outcomes and avoid repeat hospitalizations, all at a reduced cost. When nurses are given more decision making responsibility, it leads to increased innovations and efficiency within the organization.
Nursing and Health Outcome Expectations
Nurses also help generate evidence and engage in research. I already mentioned that nurses play an important role in bringing in innovation in the healthcare industry. A lot of these innovations helps shape quality and safety which are two very important factors in healthcare. One of the reasons this is possible is because nurses have a lot of knowledge about patients. Nurses spend more time with patients and inpatient rooms and wards than the average doctor and so they have a better understanding of the dynamics of being on the other end receiving care and have access to a more raw and direct feedback from patients.
When it comes to innovations, successful innovative models are not made, implemented, and sustained without proper data. In healthcare it always comes back to data, doesn’t it? Nurses have the responsibility of tracking their own data and using it to improve their own practice is part of a broader goal of improving overall care in the healthcare organization. Many don’t know this but nursing research helps build the scientific foundation for clinical practice, prevention, and improved patient outcomes. Healthcare organizations that wish to take advantage of every resource they have to grow should mobilize and utilize the nursing workforce in order to win
All nurses need to possess basic competencies to meet the demands of an ever-growing and diverse society. With how dynamic population health is, nurses should have access to clinical training all through their career. An emphasis on clinical training in multiple stages across the career lifespan of a nurse will be beneficial to the healthcare organization and overall population health. The emphasis should be on quality and safety, evidence-based practice, research, and leadership. Training bodies and nursing schools and institutions need to remove barriers that exist that prevent nurses or potential nurses from attaining advanced degrees. One way they can do this is by strengthening partnership links between community colleges and upper-division institutions that can grant degrees. Certification and continuous learning opportunities are essential to a profession that’s responsible for others’ lives.
Nurses should be allowed to practice to the full extent of their education and experience. Under-utilizing and under-employing nurses are only to the disadvantage of the healthcare organization. When nurses are used to the full extent of their capacity then they can provide cost-effective care and this can even help address the issue of primary care shortage that is plaguing some communities. Unfortunately, there are some barriers that prevent this from happening. Statutory and regulatory barriers prevent some nurses from practicing to the full extent of their licensure. It is crucial and important that nurses be permitted to provide the primary care they’re trained to give.
Diversity and Nursing
Diversifying the nursing workforce is crucial. Many communities do not have access to the best care because the majority of healthcare practitioners are not very diverse and they prefer to stay and practice in their own communities which then leads to a shortage of medical care in other communities. To reduce health disparities, greater efforts must be made to ensure that the nursing workforce reflects patients’ diverse backgrounds and cultural values. Furthermore, all nurses should be educated to provide culturally competent care. In addition, nursing needs to have more men in the profession.
Technology and Nursing
Nurses should be more engaged with the current technology and the technological advances of the healthcare industry. In nursing schools, some are already including new technology to their teachings like using simulation labs and also using online classes to reach more students. Using the latest technology and integrating it into nursing practice will help improve quality. There are also programs that provide an opportunity for nurses to learn how to apply technology solutions to improve patient care. Technology can also help foster interprofessional collaborations within the industry between nurses and other healthcare professionals. As already mentioned several times in this article, teamwork and collaboration are critical to seamless high-quality care. The process begins with understanding the roles and responsibilities of each healthcare discipline. This kind of understanding should foster more growth and greater quality of care.
Nurses Should Have Leadership Roles
Nurses should have the opportunity to take on leadership activities whether they practice at the bedside or sit in the boardroom. They must believe they are capable and fully empowered to provide excellent care and make the changes necessary to improve ineffectual systems and they must know that their organization trusts them and their abilities. Physicians and administrators must support nurses in their efforts and not undervalue their contribution. In addition, nurses need to help each other through mentoring, educational and skills development opportunities, and support networks.
